Summary |
History has come to regard Thomas Paine as the figure who gave political cogency to the liberating ideas of the Enlightenment, and his great pamphlets, Common Sense and Rights of Man, are seen as classic arguments in defense of the individual's right to assert his or her freedom in the face of tyranny.

Born in 1737, Thomas Paine rose from poverty, achieving stunning success with his writings. His anti-slavery publications resulted in the first American Anti-Slavery Society, and Common Sense ignited the American Revolution. In France, Paine enjoyed a hero’s status, albeit briefly. After narrowly escaping the guillotine, he returned to America. Having fallen out of favor with his revolutionary brothers, Paine died in relative obscurity in 1809.
