World Hunger Year

Founded in 1975 by Harry Chapin and current executive director Bill Ayres, WHY believes that solutions to hunger and poverty can be found on the grassroots level through programs and policies that promote self-reliance, economic justice, and community food security. Through the National Hunger Hotline, 1-866-3-HUNGRY, WHY is helping thousands of America’s hungry connect to food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and government programs in their neighborhoods. WHY’s online Food Security Learning Center is a hub of information and action on the international good food movement. Through the KIDS Can Make a Difference program, WHY offers an original classroom curriculum that teaches children about the problems of hunger and poverty and inspires them to action through community service. WHY also provides funds (raised through the Artists Against Hunger & Poverty program) and capacity building to over 8,750 community-based organizations who are helping hungry Americans move out of poverty.
