The National Education Association Health Information Network (HIN) was established in 1987 as the 501(c)(3) health and safety education arm of the NEA. HIN takes on some of today’s most critical public health issues as it carries out its mission of providing the school community with vital and timely health and safety information, programs, and services that are designed to improve the quality of life inside and outside the school environment.

NEA members trust HIN to deliver health information to them that is objective, trustworthy, clear, based on impeccable research, and presented in language that lay people can understand. Members turn to HIN to help them address health and safety problems and issues that they face in their personal and professional lives. HIN develops relationships and partnerships with outside organizations to help fund these efforts.

HIN tackles some of today's most critical health issues, offering health and safety training sessions at national, state and local meetings and conferences, and carrying out projects targeting important issues in public health. Throughout HIN’s work, special attention is paid to areas where minorities are disproportionately affected. HIN focuses its activities on six main areas of concern to NEA’s membership and uses support from its government, foundation, and corporate partners to assist in addressing a broad array of topics of interest and importance to the membership, including:

· Social health, including sex education, including HIV/AIDS, STI’s, teenage pregnancy; substance abuse, including tobacco

· Mental health, including stress, anxiety and depression

· Environmental health, including indoor air quality; fungus and mold; asthma; hygiene (personal and surface)

· Emergency preparedness response and school safety, includ
